Core Training Is Not Just For The Young

posted in Health & Fitness |

The terminology “core training” wasn’t around when seniors enjoyed their youthful 20’s. Today in the fitness world core training is sort of a buzzword. Seniors may think it’s nothing more than doing sit-ups as they were called back then, but it is really about the total package. Core muscles consist of the abs, back and pelvis. Seniors need to pay attention to this because as one ages one loses the powers of proprioception and balance.

Have you ever wonder why seniors are often hurting themselves from falls? Now you know. So if you have grandparents living in retirement encourage them to work on their balance and motor skills. You might just save them from a nasty bone break or a sore back if they are golfers.

Find them a certified Pilates teacher in their community. Pilates mat classes are great in developing core strength. Buy them a quality Pilates mat and carrying bag. In fact why not treat them to some new workout clothes. And when you visit grandma bring along your fitness gear and do a class with her. She’ll enjoy it more knowing that exercise means so much to you. Grandma will experience less aches and pains. She’ll develop more stamina and endurance. She’ll become more active in physical activities. Core strengthening is not just for the young.
