The Walking Stick Bonsai Is a Most Unusual Outdoor Bonsai Tree

posted in Gifts |

One of the most interesting and very different types of outdoor bonsai trees is the walking stick bonsai, also called the corylus avellana contorta or Harry’s walking stick. It’s also called the hazelnut or the European filbert. No matter what you call it, though, you’ll agree that it looks like nothing else.

This outdoor bonsai features twisted, beautiful branches that bend and contort at odd angles. When there are no leaves on the tree, it looks incredible. The deciduous leaves all fall off during the winter and early spring, leaving the branches bare and amazing. The tree also features long, yellow like catkins. These catkins dangle off the bare branches and look somewhat like festive ornaments.

The walking stick bonsai should remain outside at all times, which means you’ll need to be concerned about watering. Outdoor bonsai generally only need to be watered when the weather gets really dry or really hot. You may want to use a mist sprinkler or a drip sprinkler to water them, especially in areas that have long dry periods. Be careful to always make sure your bonsai is watered properly. If it goes without water for too long, it will die. However, don’t over water it, as this can lead to root rot.
